“AREWA?” An exhibition curated by Aisha Aliyu-Bima @ Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, Lagos

1 August @ 12:00 am WAT

₦3000

Event Details by @shyllonmuseum.

“‘AREWA?’ presents a deep and nuanced look at the North, its various cultures, peoples and the predominant ideas that make up Northern identity in today’s Nigeria. The exhibition will challenge prevailing external preconceptions of Northern Nigeria as a monolith, portraying Arewa as a deep and layered region, home to over 150 ethnicities engaging and interacting in a constant push and pull.

‘AREWA?’ seeks to engage its audience through a profound exploration of the following questions:

  • Is the “Hausa” label truly representative of the region’s diverse identities?
  • How do smaller ethnicities within Arewa navigate cultural interaction and assimilation?
  • In an increasingly globalized world, how can these communities preserve their unique artistic heritage?
  • How can contemporary art practice, foster inter-regional and National unity and progress.
  • At this pivotal time in Nigerian Art, what is the role of the Northern Artist?

The exhibition will feature paintings, photographs, sculptures and installations from contemporary artists of the region like Jerry Buhari, Sor Sen, Fati Abubakar, Sauda Imam, among others. ‘AREWA?’ will also feature a selection of lesser-known artisanal practices in this region, like the Nupe-Bida Brassworks, Borno Cap weavers, Fulani Beadworks and Bwari Pottery.

Through this exhibition, viewers will engage with Northern Nigeria and learn about the region and its subtleties beyond often parroted cliches and stereotypes.
